Still Alive and Kicking...

Since it has been a ridiculous amount of time since I last posted I will start my re-entry into blog hood with just a photo update. So bear with me as I get reacquainted with my blog and such. Hope everyone has had a great beginning to the 2010 year and that the following months prove to be just as amazing.

So this past July we bought a house...(this is not the best photo, but hopefully better ones to follow)

Last year I did quite a few cakes/cookies for friends/gatherings:I didn't get as much holiday knitting as I would have liked, but I did finish one project that I started ages ago for my mom. I am really pleased with how it turned out and I love the color. Although note to self, do not knit lace on size 2 needles...It takes forever.

Beyond knitting I have been doing some sewing. This quilt was for a friend who had a baby in August. It was twice appliqued giving it the look on both front and back.

We added a new addition to the 2 cat household, her name is Beatrice and she is mostly a black lab. She is just turning 11 weeks and she such a cutie pie. Here she is at 7 weeks the night we got her.

Pillows...

It has been awhile, but life has gotten busy. Just a quick post to let you know what I have been up to in my crafting world. I have become obsessed with making appliqued pillows. They are fun to make and create. They go pretty quick and look super cute (in my opinion anyway). It all started with Owls and went from there. Hope everyone is enjoying their summers! Off to our home inspection....

Still Knitting...

Why yes I am still knitting. I just have not had anything to report until now. I am currently only knitting one project although I should probably start something else - perhaps some socks. I am knitting another Shetland shawl. This time I am knitting in lace weight and let me just say that I feel like I am knitting with floss. I really love the emerald color. I had only 1 ball and although I thought that would be enough being that it is 470 yards....I don't think it will work out. So I went on Ravelry and found someone who was selling a skein. Tomorrow I will pop the money and the mail and hopefully my yarn will arrive soon there after. Let's hope I can get this done as it is a gift. I love how this is looking although I think I prefer a heavier weight yarn like I used for mine.

I did some sewing a few weeks ago to for my MIL and SIL's birthdays. I had some dried lavender that I used as a filling. I did 3 each and made each one different. Cupcakes, Chocolate bars, houses, presents, truffles, and M & M's. I appliqued them. It didn't take too long, although there were lots of little pieces. I am happy how they came out - the house and chocolate truffle stand are my favorite.

Not much else going on around here. Oh wait....we are looking to buy a house! That is exciting news!!! Wish us luck. Hope Spring has sprung where you are. We are having a very wet April.

Yesterday was the last day of my German class that I was taking at OSU continuing education, so I made dessert. I chose to make individual Dobos Torte. Although this is technically not a German dessert it is know through out Germany and Austria. It was created by a man named József C. Dobos from Hungary in 1884. I am very pleased with hot they turned out. Although I did over bake one tray so I made cupcakes so Jason could also have a treat. Since I had to use up the buttercream!

These cupcakes are called, 'Better than Sex' Chocolate cupcakes. Although they are quite tasty..... I decided to do some artsy photos getting my inspiration from HERE and HERE. Jason seemed to like them so that is all that matters.

Here is more Ciabatta. It makes the best French Toast. As usual I am using the best bread book...Baking Artisan Bread by Ciril Hitz. I am super happy with how they came out although I think I will be investing in a bakers peel as soon as I can.

Actual Knitting

I started and finished baby booties for a girl at work who is expecting a girl. I had finished the hat (top down baby bonnet)ravelry link ages ago and was just waiting for the right recipient. The yarn is Regia Silk in very fun baby colors. I had lots of yarn left so I did matching booties. Out of this yarn I have done 2 hats and not a pair of slippers - I might just have enough for another pair of booties. I have done these slippers twice before and after each time I tell myself I am going to do the bottoms at the same time so that they can be the same length (you might think I would just get better at measuring, but alas that is not the case).

I recently made Jason some mittens as we have been riding our bikes even in the cold and the mittens doubled with our leather gloves certainly add in keeping out the cold. So I made myself some as well. For both mittens I used Encore which is a acrylic/wool blend. It is great for those projects that will need to be washed and dried. Only I had to be difficult and choose one with a cable. I do love the cable - put not the thumb. It is an after thought thumb and although my friend helped me figure out how to do the gusset increases for a thumb - I had already finished one and wasn't going to rip the other one. I do like how they turned out, although I don't really think I am a mitten girl. I like being able to use my fingers. ;-D

It has been awhile since my last post and although I have no new knitting to show I do have a Shetalnd triangle action shot as well as some tasty treats.

At my old job I used to make Souffles every night for the restaurant, but now it is only on special occasions. Here are my Chocolate Lovelies...

And lastly I was asked by my chef to recreate the new Dine Originals Logo on a cake for the employee appreciation party. I am really pleased with how it turned out - although of course there are things I would have liked to perfect if I had had more time. It takes a steady hand that is for sure. ;-D The original logo is shown above the cake - pretty close right?

Shawl We?

My first "official" lace project is complete and drying as I type. I knit my very own Shetland Triangle (ravelry link). I am really pleased with how it turned out.

The yarn is super soft and cushy. Love the aqua marine color too. The camera doesn't do it justice in doors - but I promise to take lots more photos. Since I will probably be wearing this to death. It is a bamboo/silk blend by Ella Rae. Close up for the detail... Will post an action shot after it dries.

Beyond knitting my heart out on this I also whipped together a cake for a coworkers girlfriend's birthday.

Obama takes office tomorrow - NO MORE BUSH!!!!! Finally after 8 years we can be proud of who is in office again.

Actual Finished Knitting Projects

I have finished three project over the last few weeks. And although I have been doing lots of knitting nothing has been coming off the needles until now. You know me I had to keep ripping the items looked right.
Details: Magic Slippers by Sockpoxie (ravelry link). Pattern is for newborns - but I modified them to work for a 3 year old. The rose is from HERE. The leaf from HERE. Apparently she loves them, but hopefully I will get to see them on her soon. The rose is out of left over Lornas Lace (Red Rover), The slippers are made out of Claudia's Hand Painted (Ink), and the leaf is Dale of Norway.

Patons Kroy Socks Stripes. Added the button as these are for a little boy. My first baby shower in years and all the guests were very excited about the hand knit item. I'm sure they will look very sweet on the little one.

Details: A combination of sock patterns. Originally I was using a pattern but the heel directions were so awful I had to keep ripping because they did not work. So I used Azure's heel after modifing my stitch count. The ribbing is all me (very origina - I know). This is my husband's fourth pair of socks - he wants to be the cool professor with hand knit socks. Now if I could just get a pair for myself....

I hope that everyone had a safe and happy holiday season (thank GOD it is over) and that 2009 is proving to be a wonderful new adventire.

A Sad Farewell with cake: Best of Luck

I made this cake for a friend (Jenny) who is moving away from Columbus. She and her husband are headed to Pennsylvania and as a farewell another friend hosted their going away party. Here was my contribution:

Each of the pieces represent a city in Pennsylvania. You have the sail boat for Erie, the tree truck for Poxatoney Phil, The Steeler's Logo, the 70 freeway they will drive, the Amish buggy (hazard sign included), the Liberty Bell, and the Christmas Tree for Bethlehem (XMAS town of course). Each of the symbols are made with rolled fondant and colored by hand. I allowed them to dry for 1 to 2 days so I'm sure they were no the tastiest things around. The cake is chocolate filled with Orange Curd Mousse and cut into the shape of the Key Stone State. It is covered with Rolled Fondant with Italian Buttercream underneath. It is by far and away one of my favorite cakes. Partly as my husband said - the whimsy. I couldn't agree more. You will be missed Jenny! My first Columbus Friend (funnily enough originally from Canada). Best of Luck!!

Here is the latest quilt I made. I used the color palate from Gustav Klimt painting - Mother and Child. My MIL quilted it for me - using 2 varying sizes of circles. I love how it came out and look forward to putting on the binding and starting my next quilt project.

Eats and Knits...

I do actually still knit around here and to prove it I took a picure of my Shetland Triangle in progress....Now although this is an easy pattern to remember if you forget stupid things like YO the stitch count will be off and you will have to rip back as I have had to do numerous times. It will be well worth this effort when I am finished. I am loving the look and feel of this yarn, however I do wish it was a bit less fuzzy with fly aways.

To the right you will find some delicious Ciabatta that I made last week. This is one of our favorite breads. The formula is from Ciril Hitz book, Baking Artisan Bread. I made this partly for our Turkey day stuffing and partly just to enjoy. We made it into French toast and that was a big hit as well. I also made Pumpkin Bread (Jason's favorite minus some of the spices). This is by far and away the best pumpkin bread I have ever tasted. It is moist, flavorful, and delicious! And it uses a whole can of Pumpkin instead of 7/8 of it (I find this so annoying!)

Statistics or Madonna?

Just in case you were wondering - I do still knit and am working on some projects, but for now you get to just see some finished cakes/cupcakes.

So the photo I posted previously was of Madonna. Now here is the cake finished. Madonna is made out of rolled Fondant and painted food coloring. I had a picture/stencil that I was working from but I cut it out by hand. The hair is done with my pasta maker - very handy tool in deed. The high heels on the side are cut out with the awesomest cookie cutter from my mom.

Also I made cupcakes for Jason's statistics class and thought it would be fun to put some actual statistic symbols on top.Ok here is some works in progress. Jason's almost 4th pair of socks. I have to
finish the heel on the second sock but they are almost there.

The yarn on the right will be my very first lace project: The Shetland Triangle (raverly link). It is a Bamboo/Silk combo and it is so soft. The yarn is Ella Rae and it is 70 % Bamboo, 30 % Silk - and yes it is as yummy and delicious as it sounds.

Can anyone guess who this is??

VICTORY Cookies: YES WE DID!

French Macarons (filled with ganache): A first time for me and a first time for our country. Obama won the popular vote at 53% and he also won the electoral college with 349 electoral votes. He is a man of the people, for the people. Many thanks to those of you who got out and voted. It was an honor to be here in Ohio when it finally turned BLUE!!! I am so glad I got to be apart of this amazing history. Never have I lived in a state where my vote made a difference and now it has happened. That is right, I am living in another BLUE state!!! GO OBAMA, rock the house!

In One Week....

We will have voted in our new president (Obama). I can not stress the importance of this election enough. If you can vote go vote, if you can vote early go vote early, if you need help getting there - ask, if you can help people get there - help, VOTE. There has not been a more important election in quite sometime and I am honored to be apart of it. So please get out there and VOTE (for Obama) and lets make history.

On another note...Pizza:

Another recipe from Baking Artisan Bread this week was Pizza Dough. I made the dough last Thursday and we are still enjoying it. Yes that means a lot of pizza, but when it is made from scratch who can have a problem with that. Also Jason would eat pizza every day if I wanted too.

Now keep in mind that these are the first ones we did. We got better as we made them in terms of getting them into the oven that is.

Good Eats?

No longer naked! The cupcakes were a big hit at the cohort party and for the kitchen crew at work on Sunday. Not complete with out some Halloween candy....

No new crafts as I just finished ironing for my new quilt, but how about some more eats:

One of my amazing instructors (Chef Hitz) from school recently published his first bread baking book. Now for those of you out there you have wanted to try and make your own bread, this is the book to use. He has master recipes and then he shows you how to build on those with all kinds of combinations. I highly recommend this book not just because I know him, but because I have used it and it is perfect for the home cook. He even has a recipe for croissant dough and how to make home made buttery tasty croissants and pain de chocolate. He explains it all and helps you to make wonderful home made (tastes like bakery) fresh bread. Go to his website if you are interested - and yes you will pay a bit more at his site, but hey you get it autographed. Today I made Focaccia! It began on Monday night when I made the poolish (to the right).

Here is the finished mixed dough. Ciabatta is s super wet dough so although it may not look like any dough you have ever seen - I promise it does turn into yummy bread. This dough requires 4 stretch and folds to give it strength and structure. It is also a bread that has lots of open air pockets.

Here is the pre baked focaccia. I caramelized onions to put on top.

All baked and ready to eat. Tomorrow it will be used for tuna fish sandwiches, yummy. It was a great day and the wonderful thing about bread is that you can be doing all kinds of other things while you wait. I did laundry, dishes, and ironing. All I had to do was do my stretch and folds when the timer went off and then I could go back to my other tasks.

And now for some knitting - about 2 months ago I finished a baby bonnet for an old colleague of Jason's and we recently received a photo of the cute little one with my very own hand knit hat on. Perfectly girly colors and cuteness.

Crafting Away

Today was my day off and I spent it running errands, baking and fixing a problem I have wanted to fix for some time. Jenny and I made a pact for the day to motivate us to get some crafting done. Like her I am not in a rut, more just having motivation to get all of my ideas worked through and started at least. ;-D

Here is the bag I worked on today to the left. I realize it doesn't look like much - but it was in desperate need of interface. As you can see to the right is the heavy weight sew in interface I purchased today during my errands. I have never used the sew in kind before - but it is much preferred over the fusible kind that I have used in the past. Here is the original bag to the right. Notice the slouch? It is no more! Beyond sewing I also baked some cupcakes for a get together on Saturday with Jason's classmates. Here they are in their necked glory. They will be frosted after work tomorrow in order to be able to leave asap on Saturday when I get home. Notice the cute pumpkin wrappers?

Last but not least I am about 1/2 inch to 1 inch away from the heel on Jason's 4th pair of socks. This is the second time I have done toe up two at a time and I am still loving it.

Jason and his brother and all their cousins were given matching chests when they were little. We have never been particularly fond of the red/brownish stain it was finished in, so I repainted it a bright white and made a seat cushion. It is now the perfect place to sit down and take of your shoes.

A Vote for Change: OBAMA

Jason and I just recently moved to Columbus, OH as you know and it will be the first time that our vote will count as we head into this very tight election. Ohio is one of the states that both candidates are targeting and because of this we had the opportunity to go and see Obama and Biden talk in Dublin.

This was our first time going to any kind of political rally and let me just say that if you didn't or already love the Obama/Biden ticket after these speeches, then you weren't listening.

I wanted to share some photos and also remind everyone to get out and vote - I would prefer it be a vote for Obama, but vote all the same no matter who you support.

There was over 18,000 supports at this rally with lines wrapping around each other just to get it.

It will be a month soon since we left Boston and what a month it has been. It has been crazy busy around here and I am now just settling back down. I do hope everyone has been well although I know like Chan who recently lost her beloved pup that life certainly has its ups and downs.

I am certainly enjoying Columbus thus far and trying to get into the swing of things. Most recently I have been doing lots of cleaning and organizing, but thankfully knitting and crafting shall commence soon.

But a bit of a rockin photo to share in the mean time... I made this cake for a local Jazz musician here in Columbus.Here are the photos of our empty apartment...

Falling, Packing, and Moving

I am here to say that I am a bad blogger. Not because I hadn't thought of blogging, but because I didn't actually do the blogging. It has been a busy month and will prove to be an even busier July.

Last week the husband and I drove (or rather he drove most) to our future home - Columbus, Ohio. We found a great apartment right on N. High street. It is a kind of loft apartment with one wall of brick and a large room with a wall dividing the bedroom area, but the best thing about our new place is that I will have a dishwasher and washer and dryer inside our unit. I haven't had a dishwasher in 2 years and we haven't had a w/d in our apartment in 6 years. I say it is about time. I really enjoyed Columbus. It was super clean and everyone is really friendly. While we were there we had dinner with a fellow blogger Jenny and her husband at Spagio's Cellars. Another night we also met and had dinner with a fellow Ravelryer Marisa (Ravelry link) and her boyfriend at Surly Girl Saloon. It was a great visit with some new friends. I think Columbus is going to be wonderful. On the way home we got to see Niagara Falls!! One of my favorite shows was based in Niagara Falls (Wonder Falls) so it was fun to actually see it in person. It was unbelievably beautiful. The noise, the view, the mist - it was breathtaking.
Not much knitting going on, but lots of packing. Stay tuned for actual knitting content.

Sox and Squares

I saw my first Red Sox game at Fenway last week and let me just say how much fun was that. Yes, the tickets and food are overpriced, but you can't beat the energy at a home game at the countries oldest ball park (completed in 1912). And we won! Not much knitting happening here as I am only into the toes on Jason's new socks and partially into a scarf for a friend, so instead you will get some highlights from Fenway.

On another note, my mom has started a charity project called - *Little Bitty Balls of Yarn* (LBBY) You can check out for further details on her blog, but the basics are to knit a square or lots of squares for her to sew into a 'Love Blankie' for those going through chemo therapy. For the squares: CO 30, K 30 rows, use size 8 needles. Any type of yarn will work as long as it isn't scratchy.

Cake Anyone?

This past weekend my bff Theo graduated from JWU in Providence. As a surprise I decided to make her favorite cake - Red Velvet with Cream Cheese frosting. This recipe takes 1 ounce of red food coloring - that is quite the color.

I had a vision of what I wanted the cake to look like and it worked out perfectly. The cake I did in rounds and made it look like a button - even with an edge like some buttons have (she loves them) and around the bottom edge I did a neckerchief (we wear them at culinary school at J&W) with the nutrition coloring at the edge. For the cupcakes I made them into little chef hats with rolled fondant. The car ride to Providence was almost sudden death for the cupcakes, but they were super cute anyway.

For some knitting I finished another Koolhaas hat. This time Jason will be sporting his very own cotton Koolhaas. I really love this hat as you can tell it is my 3rd version with at least one more for now on the way (for me). It is such a great pattern and it looks so good when it is one that I can't help wanting to knit more. Also plans to cast on for some socks soon too.

Off to see a Red Sox game (my first one at Fenway). I will post pictures tomorrow. Perhaps there will be another no hitter tonight...

Been Rusted, Now I'm Rooted

I have finished the 'Rusted Root'. I love this top and for my next one I plan to modify it a bit to use a pattern I used in socks that I think will look very cool on a sweater. Who doesn't love a sweater that can be knit from the top down with no seaming?

Needles - 6's and 5's
Mods - Tubular cast on for the neck - great video in the link above about how to do this. Great for socks too.

Anyone Still Out There...

Devon can you hear us?

Oh, yes here I am!

It has been a busy couple of weeks, with work, knitting, biking, and more knitting. I have completed another KoolHaas hat with another on the needles and one more to follow for me after that. But mostly I am trying to make my way through Rusted Root. I would really like to finish it by May. Wish me luck....

On Monday the 23rd was the Boston Marathon and Jason and I decided to make a morning of it and head out to watch the race. Let me just say, that had to be one of the coolest things I have ever had the privilege of seeing. Here are a couple of photos of the two woman who took first (woman on the right) and second(woman on the left). They were neck and neck. These photos were taken about 3 miles from the finish line. Here is the man who has won the marathon the last 3 years. This makes his 3rd win in a row. He has run 4 times with wins in 2003, 2006, 2007, & 2008 - Look no competition....the 2nd and 3rd winners came quite a ways back.

Winter had finally ended here in Boston (or so I think). Here are the Magnolia trees that sit across our street. They are such gorgeous flowers. They smell so nice. Their only problem is that they fall so quickly and make a hell of a mess. But one must savor them, no?

Now off to knit some more and work on my resume....

The whole thing seems like a brilliant magic act to me, so when she hands me a whole egg and suggests I do it by myself, you would have thought she was letting me drive the car.

This book is a great read about someone who followed their passions to save the family. And who doesn't love a heroian who saves the day with CAKE.

Progress and Updates

After blocking the Azure socks - they FIT!!, Granted it takes two of to get them on, but once they are on they look perfect. Note to self when doing toe up socks, switch to a larger needle for bind off and do a pattern that is actually for a mans foot. LOL

I am working on two Kool Haas hats (one for me and one for the husband). The one for me is done using Pumpkin Spice (look familiar Jessi?). This yarn was purchased from ETSY shop (she has some gorgeous hand spun over there now, so lovely).

I am also making progress on my Rusted Root. I have tied off the sleeves and am making my decreases for the bust. It is looking lovely - although a bit small. Lets hope that is deceiving. ;-D I really love Cotton Fleece and hope to find more things to do with it. Also have you seen the new knitty summer yarns - they look yummy!

It is official we are headed to Columbus, Ohio. After the long application process last year, we have our final destination. My husband will be working on his ph.d at OSU. Now to find a place to live and a place to work....any advice on the area would be greatly appreciated. All information is welcome.

Finished Knits: Oops, I did it again...

With all my good intentions the socks don't fit. Perhaps after a wash and block there might be a chance that they will fit my husband's feet. If not I guess I will have to take them, darn.

Here is the story, my husband loves hand knit socks and I am happy to oblige; however, this time around I choose the wrong pattern for a man's foot. With all the increases and decreases it makes for a very tight fit. Also this is knit in 100% Merino, oh so soft, but with no nylon there doesn't seem to be any room of a bit of ease. Therefore I think where my husbands feet are concerned I think wool/nylon will be better. They allow for a bit of ease on my tight a$$ knitting.

The Patten: Azure Socks
Size: Large
Yarn: Claudia Hand Painted - Merino
Colorway: Walk in the Woods
Needles: Size 1, two circulars (two at a time) THE VERY BEST WAY TO KNIT SOCKS.
Advice: The pattern is very well written and easy to follow. This is a great pattern and if you choose to do it I would suggest a solid yarn as this very lovely color although it may be makes it very hard to see the lovely whale pattern. Also with all the increases and decreases it does not leave a lot of ease in the socks, just keep it in mind if you like a longer sock along the ankle.

Finished Knits - A Race to Ship Out

Here is a new FO - Koolhaas hat from Brooklyn Tweed. This is a great hat - the design is amazing and inventive. I had a bit of trouble at the beginning, but that is only because I didn't read the chart right. This was knit with Lamb's Pride - on size 6 needles. I really love how is turned out. It could probably be a bit longer, but it still fits and doesn't require that annoying tug over the ears that some hats do. I knit this for my SIL for her birthday. I was on a race to the finish and completed it yesterday. My only dislike of the pattern is the decreases for the crown - now this could be me or is most likely me, but I couldn't get the pattern to match up with the directions. The tall people looking down on this hat will notice the pattern did not continue - but oh well. I think that this pattern works best with solids or a verigated all with different shades of the same color. I highly recommend it. The pattern was originally printed in the Interweave knits Holiday magazine.

Also notice the new glasses - very hip if I do say so myself. (Although I do think that this photo makes my nose look 10 times bigger then it really is. LOL)

Earrings. I love to wear them and make them. Whether long dangly ones or just studs - my ears are always happy with earrings. You can dress up or even dress down with the right pair of earrings. You can go really big or dainty and you can make a statement. I know it is not very exciting for E, but I couldn't think of another E.

Progress and Finishing: It's All a Process

Progress: My husband's Azure socks are coming along nicely. Almost to the heel of the socks. Did I tell you that I love the Claudia's Hand painted - 100% Merino. Lovely colors and even better feel.

Finishing: This is my latest quilt for my MIL for her birthday. You would think that drawing lines, sewing along lines, and cutting would be super fast and you would be right if you stuck with it and didn't go do other projects in the mean time. I am pleased with the full quilt version of my smaller bags. It screams 'SPRING' and that is exactly the effect I was going for. Let's hope she likes it. The picture gives the illusion that it is huge, but it is more of a small wrap quilt. I just don't have the space to do something larger. Maybe someday I will have a craft room....

Danish. Now I know what you are thinking, those things are so not good for you. And although this may be true it is all about moderation. It is the name of the game. I bake these twice a week when I cover for the over night baker. I love the process of dough and especially the final product.

Knitting Socks: On 2 Circulars

I love knitting socks, but I find that knitting them on 2 circulars and at the same time is by far and away my favorite way to do it. I wanted to share how to do it for those of you having trouble getting started.

Step 1 - The cast on of course. If you are doing Toe - Up look HERE. If you are doing ankle down look HERE and HERE. The link above is how I learned to do the magic seamless cast on for toe up socks. If you have 2 balls of yarn just wrap into 2 balls. If you have one ball, weigh it and split in half when you wrap the balls.

Step 2 - The set up: When you cast on for the first sock, immediately cast on for the second.

Step 3 - Working the rows: One set of needles will always be hanging. You are always working the front needle - while the back needle rests. If you notice in the photo (to the left) that I have both socks pushed up on the 'Left' needle and my working 'Right' needle is getting into place to knit the first sock. In the photo to the right I am working on the first sock and you will notice as you work the sock you are making a circle of the front needle and the back needle still hangs. In the photo below I have almost finished with the first sock and will be moving onto the next sock. Notice the resting needles that I am holding in my left hand.

Step 3 - The Second Sock: Same as the first, just make sure to use the yarn for the second sock. You are always working the same row on both socks.

Step 4 - Once you get the hang of these the pattern directions will talk you through the rest.

Here is a better picture of how the needles look while you are working. Notice the hanging circular to the back and the working needles in front. The great thing about knitting on 2 circulars and knitting 2 socks at the same time - you will have 2 socks completed when you are done. Randomness, Contests, and Socks

I am a bad blogger. I received some lovely gifts from my good friend Chan and I have yet to share the goodies. Isn't that tape measure too cute? This yarn is so soft and the colors are gorgeous - it is called mystic lake which is the perfect name.

I also wanted to share 2 of my birthday gifts as they were pretty freakin cool. My sockapalooza pal who lives in Portland, Oregon, who I got to meet on my trip home, made me an awesome bag. The funny thing is I had been salivating over this very fabric even before our plans had been finalized. She is a great gal, a great friend and it is all thanks to knitting and socks that we met and got to know each other. The other killer gift was made by my very talented mom. She knows exactly what I like in a bag - lots of pockets and compartments to keep my stuff organized (or at least allowing the attempt to organize)

Now for some knitting content: I am officially in love with toe up socks and knitting them at the same time on 2 circulars. This method is by far and away the best I have done yet. Although I may be jumping the gun as I have not gotten to the heal and gusset yet, but I still think I will love this method. I am knitting Azure. It is a great pattern, well written and beautiful. I probably didn't choose the best yarn coloring for this pattern, because the whale patterns gets lost - but I still love it. These are socks for the husband - who seems to think that he will be known as the professor with the cool socks. What he doesn't understand is that I just don't knit fast enough - or perhaps it is just that I do a lot of reading too? Or maybe I just need more hours in the day.

It will be a year ago on the 1st of March that I started this knitting blogging venture. It has been quite a ride. It all started from my friend Michele who started her own blog and I thought that was pretty swell so I jumped on board. I have made many a friend through this wonderful knitting/blogging community. Although my posting has not been as much as I would like since the dreaded holiday season I do hope to get back to my regularly scheduled blogs. In anticipation of my bloganniversary I am holding a CONTEST! I will have all the details up on Wednesday. Come back and play along - I promise it will be an easy one.

Finished Bits

I finished the Skull Isle Hat and now I just hope it fits the little one. Yes that is right I knit it for a 2 year old (her parents will appreciate it). I think it turned out great and now I want to make one for myself. I don't really care for the top decreases, but what can you do when you have to get rid of over 100 stitches - the little pleats happen.

While home in Oregon I mostly finished my quilt. I still need to add the binding but you get the idea. I love how it turned out and look forward to doing more appliqué projects.

My knitting tips:

This is actually a tip from my knitting instructor, but I will pass her wisdom along - use bread ties to hold up the extra yarn when doing a long tail cast on. It keeps you from using the wrong strand and keeps things neater.

Our cats. They bring so much fun and excitment into our lives. I don't know what we would do with out them. Nicolae and Owen are truly their own 'cat'. Each has a personality and brings something different to our family. Nicky is the cuddler, Owen the adventurer.

Could these two be any cuter? Although I am biased. Everyone who comes to our house always wants to take Nicolae home. Owen on the other hand has gotten the name "Devil" from my BF. But to us we love them no matter. We couldn't ask for any two better loving pets to call our own.

Bread. One of my favorite things to eat, make, and create with. This is a picture of my finally project in my Junior year at Johnson and Wales University. The theme was the Gold Rush. Everything you see here can be eaten. Part of it is made out of 'Dead Dough' and the other pieces are 'Live Dough'. This was an awesome class where I learned a lot and got to eat a lot of yummy BREAD. Who doesn't love bread - especially fresh baked?

Bread and Pastries are my chosen career - what could be sweeter then that? (pun intended)

I'm Rusted on an Isle

This week has been a learning experience. I was always scared of Fair Isle, that is until my star pupil decided to try her hand at it. So I too decided to bite the bullet and jump on board. The pattern is from Son of a Stitch and Bitch it is called, Skull Isle. Working with two colors so far hasn't caused me too many problems it is more of a question of where I am in the pattern. Now I just hope it fits.

My Rusted Root is going much better now. After ripping out for the 7th time, I cast on with a scrap piece of yarn to do the lace pattern. I did each row and wrote down the number of stitches that I should have at the end of each row. Now I am well on my way - it is looking great. But will it fit? I read up on those who were making the pattern and most of them said that they wished they had CO for the smaller size because the cotton/wool blend is super stretchy. So I cast on for a small rather then the medium so lets hope that it works for me otherwise my sister will be getting it for her birthday.

Rusted Root: A Practice in Patience

Hi my name is Devon and I love to knit and I am a perfectionist. Therefore the amount of things I knit is very low. Rusted Root is a great top - knit from the top down. I love the color of yarn I have chosen and once I really get going I think I am really going to love it. I especially love that it is knit in the round.

I have cast this top on at least 7 times and never made it past the 8th row - What is wrong with me? (on second thought, don't answer that). Now that I have ripped it again I picked up my needles and knit just the lace pattern. This seems to be my main problem. It occurred to me that I also like to make things far more difficult then they need to be. I learned a new technique with this which is pretty cool, it is called a tubular cast on. It is perfect for casting on in ribbing and it is really stretchy. The funny thing is that this is not the cast on originally called for - but I would rather learn something new then pick up stitches for a color later. BO never looks very nice at the neck line when I do it.

I wish I had more to show and report, but that is life as a knitting ripper.
My next sock project, are these wonderfully gorgeous Azure pattern on knitty. Aren't they gorgeous?

New Year: 2008 - Endless Possibilities

Happy New Year my fellow knitters, bloggers, friends, family, kids, cats, dogs, etc. This year has flown by with out me even realizing it. So I have seen this on a few other blogs so I shall follow suit and try and remember all that I did this past year. A recap, updates, and possibly even a few resolutions. This may be a bit on the long side, so I have prepared a lovely 'Stollen' in honor of the weather and time of year we are having here in Boston.

January: I worked my last few days on the line in Aujourd'hui. Began my training as the relief overnight baker.

February: Flew home to Oregon for my birthday to visit my family who I hadn't seen in over a year. It was great to be home with out the stress of a holiday being the reason.

March: Thanks to Michele whom I followed suit and added my name to the knitting blogging world. We also started our family blogging - on a daily basis (a bit boring if you ask me). LOL

April: I gave my friend Jenn her first knitting lesson. Joined my first knitter swap - Anne you are one special lady. I do believe this is the month that I helped a fellow friend/knitter (Chan) turn the heal of her sock via gmail chat. What a fun way to cement a friendship. A month of sadness for those who lost loved ones in the Virgina Tech violence.

May: Did a lot of planning for our Austria/Germany trip. Kept very busy at work with all the graduations here in Boston. Got a broken blood vessel in my eye right before we left on our 2 week trip.

June: A total blur! Finished the first sock for Sockapalooza.

July: Our 6th anniversary. Met a fellow blogger/knitter/friend when she stopped off in Boston. Michelle it was a pleasure meeting you and I do hope we get to meet up again. Got my invite to Ravelry - LOVE THIS! Finished my sockapalooza socks.

August: Met another blogger/knitter/friend when she and her husband came to look at preschools here in Boston. Jenn it was so wonderful to meet you - I do hope we get the chance again. If only we weren't moving.... Sign ups started for Knit 1 Tea 2 swap that I hosted with Mary and Chan. Received my virtual vacation swap package from Jessi. How fun was that swap. My sockapalooza socks arrived - nice and toasty. Got my 5th tattoo - cupcakes got to love them.
September: Finally finished Isabella.

October: Finished Jason's socks (or second pair that is). This made 3 pairs for the year. Tea party swap arrives and with a wonderful new friend - Nancy.

November: Finished a few XMAS gifts, baby shower gifts, and worked a lot.

December: Took a knitting finishing class - wonderful, awesome, eye opener. Blogged only once and worked over 60 hours in over time.

For the year 2007 I read 40 books and to name a few of my favorites and recommendations (in order of the way I read them) - The Fool's Tale, Tipping the Velvet, Tender at the Bone, The Wal-Mart Effect, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, Skipping Towards Gomorrah, The Commitment, Nickel and Dimed, A Thousand Splendid Suns, Lucky, Comfort Me with Apples, Garlic and Sapphires, Julie and Julia, Run, Lovely Bones, Friends and Mothers, The Starter Wife, T is for Trespass. I recommend all those I have written, but those in bold I strongly recommend. In 2006 I read 76 books (and yes I have spread sheets for both years and will continue to practice this each year).

So for my resolutions this year, I will finish appliqueing my quilt by the end of January, I will try and read more, knit more, bike more, be a better packer, get rid of stuff we don't need, etc. I have never been good with resolutions, but we will see how this year pans out.

To all of you out in blog land and the 'real' land I wish you a very Happy New Year filled with lots of new adventures, wonderful memories, and lots of extra knitting time or 'fill in the blank' you time.

Christmas Has Come and Gone, now for 2008

Here is to you and yours wishing you had a happy holiday season and a very merry New Year. Can anyone else believe it is 2008? It has been quite a year. I have met so many wonderful bloggers/knitters and I hope that as our blogs grow so will our friendships.

2008 will be bringing lots of changes for myself and my husband, but we are up for the challenge and looking forward to what the future holds.

Now I would like to warn you that this post may be a bit long so if you want to skip the reading and just look at the pictures I completely understand.

Since it has been over a month since my last post I shall bring you up to speed on what I have been doing. WORK, WORK, WORK, more WORK, and oh yeah, WORK. And I know that we are technically past Christmas I wanted to show you our holiday decor. I managed to squeeze it in on my 1 day off before the craziness began. The picture to the left is how I got our tree home. Last year at around the same time I used my bicycle and this year due to snow, my grocery cart made do. To the right you will see our tree in its full decorated glory.

I did not make my Christmas knitting quota and I have come to terms with that. I did however manage to fit a few knitted items into my busy schedule. For my SIL/BIL I made some pot holders and a little dish scrubber. For my husband's Aunt, a bath scrub, for a few knitterly friends some fun leaf pins, and lastly a pot holder, and dish scrubber for a friend, and a hat for her boyfriend (and yes it was another coronet - I can't seem to stop myself).

The weather here in Boston has been a lot of snow as of late and our car decided to play hide and seek with the other cars. Can you see our Honda? She is in the left bottom corner.... This game began after our second dumping of snow. And this photo was taken only in the middle. We ended up having 2 feet accumulated after both snows. Believe it or not this is not the most snow that we have ever seen. I know some of you out there are thinking, this girl is crazy that amount of snow is nothing, but coming from Portland, Oregon - this amount of snow is something for us anyway.

For Christmas my mom knit us beautiful scarf and hat sets. My set is made out of Noro Kureyon. And Jason's is in Patons SWS (which by the way I have never used, but after seeing it and feeling it I am now officially a fan and in love with the feel and look).

Happy Knitting to all and to all a good night. I do hope that work will not interfere with my life of blogging and knitting again for some time. It has been very hard to be away, but I am back and I do hope to be getting some serious knitting done. Perhaps I should start fitting in Christmas gifts now for next year. Then maybe I just might be able to finish for the holidays. LOL

Christmas Knitting Avoidance: A How To

Not that I have done this on purpose, but I have found a way to avoid my holiday knitting. That is right. All one has to do is volunteer to knit a few baby items and you are in the clear. Now in truth I still will be doing that holiday knitting, just under what I like to call pressure.

I chose to knit my friend's friend a baby bonnet (Top Down) because 1: it was my choice and 2: I wanted to learn something new. Being that this is for a baby I wanted a washable yarn. What I found was yarn love. It is sport weight wool that is 100% machine washable and dry able. It is by Louet it is, Gems - Opal and I am now officially in love with this yarn. The mom doesn't know if it is a boy or girl so I choose a lovely shade of Aqua that will work for a boy or a girl.

Next on the holiday knit avoidance list is baby mittens.....

Still kicking, still knitting, and trying to finish way too many holiday knits. Why do we do this to ourselves, I said I was going to start earlier, but that never happened. Now I am in knit fast as you can mode - but then I some how volunteered myself to knit a baby shower gift for a friend. Oh the upside of volunteering I am knitting two new things and I have learned two new techniques - knitting with 2 circulars and the Magic Cast on found here and here.

No actual knitting to share currently but I wanted to share my awesome Ravelry beta T-shirt. It is a bit on the snug side, but it works. Yay for Ravelry!!!

And because I have no knitting here is a picture of how I keep my needles organized - jealous? I use a 12 slot folder normally used for bills and coupons and fold the top flap back and secure it with the elastic cord that comes with it and then I took out my handy dandy labeler and went crazy. Now in order to keep needles in there own slot with out slidding underneath the plastic I came up with card stock as a way of containing them. It works great! Then in an effort to make it just a little bit prettier I put it into one of those photo boxes you see at Michaels for under $5. The perfect solution.

Now I don't know about you, but sometimes I have multiple projects going on and my DPN are not where they should be so I have set up a system of writing the needle size, the number in the set and the location if 2 or more are being used on a random project shoved at the bottom of my bag or yarn bin. All in the hopes of organizing. SNOL

Another One Down, Many More to Go

My Holiday knits are going well so far, I have finished another project and wanted to share my close up. Now that I have finished the 2 bigger projects, I am having trouble starting my smaller projects, but tonight is the night I will buckle down!!!

I am in love with this yarn. It is a wool/silk blend that is super soft and it hold its shape beautifully for cables. I also love this color - it is the perfect color of fall leaves, cooked pumpkins, and yummy butternut squash.

Christmas Knitting: Hints, Projects, Progress

I am well on my way to knitting through my Christmas list. I will not be telling you what I am knitting just in case those who read my blog will be recipients, but I will be giving lots of hints with a reveal at the end of the holidays. I have only knit 1 and a half items, but so far I think I am off to a great start.

Family Pets: A family Loss

It is never easy to experience loss and a family pet is no different. Our only comfort is knowing that Chewy is beyond the pain now and having a great time with Fred and others that went before.

Odds, Ends, Sox, and Such

Go Red Sox must be said. They are rockin right now and I am one happy camper! On to knitting:

It has been a bit since I updated last so this may turn out to be a long one, so bear with me. First up is this gorgeous yarn that I purchased from Jessi over at Alabama Fiber Dreams. She also sent along a beautiful stitch marker. The yarn is called Pumpkin Spice and the fact that I love pumpkin meant I had to have this lovely yarn.

Next up my Brother and Sister in Law just got back from Japan and The Philiphines and brought me back these awesome Bamboo needles and too cute socks.

Anyone want to take a guess at how much I paid for all of these gorgeous fabrics? A very cool chain fabric/craft - store is downsizing here in the East and walking buy I saw a sign that said $.50 per fabric sample. I looked at my friend and asked did I read that correctly? For $2.73 I got all of these upholstery grade fabrics - aren't wonderful? Lots to sew....

Up next is our regular schedule knitting content. Remember this hat, well I didn't really care for how it turned out so I decided to rip and repeat. I also finished another hat for the same friend so she could give them to her neighbor. I give you a real pumpkin and an apple. After these two hats I finished 2 more Coronets for a co-worker. I love this hat and I plan on making lots more. The cable on this hat is simple, but lovely and I love how it pops in the purple. It is harder to see in the black, and for future projects I will be sticking to lighter colors such as browns and grays when doing this pattern. I love it when the cable draws you in.

Off to finish my laundry and dishes that I have been avoiding.

These Socks Were Made For Walking

And that is just what they will do....I finished my 3rd pair of socks and Jason is the lucky recipient. The first pair I finished shown here to the right are not my favorite. It was a sock that I learned by and I am grateful for that and thankful that I am a better sock knitter now. The second pair I finished was for sockapalooza. These I am in love with and wish I could have kept them for me. And lastly the ones I just finished (while the Red Sox lost in the 11th Freaking inning - and for those of you who don't know there are only 9 innings and the Indians scored 7 runs in the last inning. UGH! So I stayed up to watch my team loose, ain't that the pits. But it is only the 2nd game and they still have a chance....) I am very pleased with these socks. The pattern is Undulating Rib Socks by Ann Budd (one of my favorite pattern writers, great turned heel and great instructions). I will not point out the mistakes in these socks, but those could have been helped if I hadn't had so much time between the first and second or if I had kept better notes. Although my notes seemed to be detailed - my slash marks and such mislead me. But I have learned my lesson and plan on either taking better notes or not leaving so much time in between.

Here is the close up of the pattern which is so unique and super easy once you get started! The sock is in Lorna's Lace Gold Hill. Wish there was a bit less of the purple, but what can you do. I needed the yarn and there were very few colors that had 2 skeins and being the impatient gal I am sometimes - I bought the most boy looking color I could find.

I am thinking of doing a toe up this time, which I am excited about and looking forward to trying - and this time they will be for me. Any tips?

8 Random Things: My OCD Version

Jessi tagged me with a 8 random things Meme and I thought I would put my own twist on it....
I am tagging Michele, Melissa, Nancy, Roni, and Mary. And no this doesn't make me crazy.... or does it??

I have to have my toilet paper come from the bottom. If it doesn't I have to switch it. (Thanks for the idea Jessi).
When stocking anything at work everything has to be facing the same direction.
If I am leaving a place and I know I locked the door I have to go back and check at least once.
Even though I know I put my credit card or ID back into my purse, I always have to double check.
I enjoy rearranging things although my husband sees it as my way of loosing things and making it harder for him to find what he never needed before.
Labeling is very necessary in my life. If I could I would label everything.
I love symmetry and if possible I have to have things that way - whether that be in the houses I like or just how I arrange things; it is important to me.
I have to have all of my dollar bills, credit cards etc. facing the same direction in my wallet.

Progress: I am working on finishing Jason's 2nd sock and I am so close I can taste it. I hope to have that done sometime in the next week so that I can cast on for my first pair of socks for me. I think I am going to attempt doing them toe up! I am working on finishing 2 hats for a co-worker; I have to get these done before the weather here in Boston decides to actually get cold.

Presents: Chan, Mary and I were hosts on the K1 T2 Swap and let me just say that through it all, these ladies were and are wonderful. Jessi sponsored our contests as well as sending along something for us - the beautiful tea stitch markers (on the left). Nancy and Holly sent lovely 'Thank You' gifts for hosting the swap. Nancy set along this adorable tea plate who looks just like my Owen. Holly sent these gorgeous stitch markers (on the right). Thank you ladies for the thoughtful gifts. They will be put to very good use!

Pondering: Where do I start on my XMAS knitting? Do I start with the small projects that are quick and easy or do I start with the bigger items and work the little stuff on the side. This is apparently what I do to avoid actually starting the knitting. Perhaps I should just start it....

Guess what! I got to meet a fellow blogger on Friday. I met with Jen from Friender and her daughter Mia for lunch here in Boston and it was fabulous. We had such a great time and although I didn't get a photo, it was a very memorable time. She is just as kind and wonderful in person as she is on her blog. If only we lived closer....

Tea Party : Come Have a Cup with Me

Caution this is going to be a long one.....
I know it has been awhile since my last post, but life has gotten in the way (I do hate it when that happens...) I have been very busy at work and trying to do some knitting. Details to follow.

Nancy at Days Go By (too fast in my opinion), out did herself with my awesome, lovely, fantastic, perfect for me swap package (I'm sure I could think of more adverbs, but I will conclude with those) LOL. I rode my bike to the post office and seeing that the box was a bit too big for me to bike home with, I took everything out and put it into bags and here is what I found. A wonderful melange of Each package wrapped and a lovely card introducing herself. I don't know where to begin to thank you Nancy for all the thought and detail you put into my wonderful package.

She sent me lovely scone mixes (can't wait to use them - love me some scones), delicious cookies (and yes I ate some already), wonderful smelling teas (3 loose teas (I tried the Oasis Mango White tea - delicious) I have never tried any of the ones she sent so I am eager to have a cup and guess what she sent - the perfect two tea cups. I have now officially started my tea cup collection!! They are lovely and all mine (but of course I would be willing to share if someone wanted to have a cup or two). LOL

She also sent along some awesome Alabama Fiber Dreams Stitch Markers - love the green and butterflies! The yarn is all gorgeous. She sent along my very own never tried Tofutsies, some lovely alpaca (pink, my favorite), and a wool/silk blend from MYC that is gorgeous. She sent me lots of other yummy, special things and even something just for my kitties. And look at these lovely felted coasters she made with these gorgeous colors. Currently using them now - they are fantastic.

One of the neatest things she sent was my name sake....Again Nancy, thank you so much for all your wonderful gifts. More importantly I thank you for your new friendship - I do hope that we will continue to get to know each other! I feel well and truly spoiled. I'm sending you lots of hugs your way!

On to some knittin: I finished Holly's pot holders. Don't worry she got her package. I was really happy with how they turned out. I would make a few changes like adding a border of garter stitches in order to make room for the sewing thread. I did my best to match the colors, but a bit of garter would have been nice. My latest knit was for a friend at work who wanted a 'pumpkin' hat with a brown stem. More nut like then pumpkin like, but I did as I was asked....now off to more knits!

Bits of Beads, Knits, and Quilts

Can anyone tell me how it got to be the end of September so quickly? I have only gotten one thing of my XMAS knitting done and I have lots more to go. I really love giving at least one hand made item to friends and family for the holidays, but I don't know if I am going to make it this year. EEK!! Please someone develop a way to squeeze more time out of each day!

Over the course of my weekend I have managed to finish up a few things. I got to do quite a bit of crafting which was lovely. A family friend of ours has a little girl that will be 2 in December and I wanted to finish cutting out all the applique pieces for her quilt. I made one for her when she was born and I some how got myself on the 2 year plan - although I'm not sure I will be able to keep up. All that is left for me to do is the actual appliqué.... My wonderful MIL is going to quilt it for me on her amazing machine. I only wish I had the space to do all the crafting I would like.

Next on the craft list was to finish the knitting part of my tea pals pot holder - I really love this pattern and can't wait to show off how it looks all sewed up with the fabric and batting.

The honeycomb effect is lovely and I really love how it pops with this red. The other crafty thing I was able to accomplish was to finish a necklace for my friend and fellow blogger Michele. I was inspired by the large center button and knew it would really look awesome as a necklace.

Work is getting busier, but more importantly I get to go to a concert on Friday night - Rilo Kiley here we come. I love this band and if you haven't heard them go check them out on Youtube. You wont regret it.

To Seam or Not to Seam: A Question

For those of you who know me - I'm sure you have heard me bitch about seaming. After about 20 different tries (and still I'm not 100% happy) I came up with this finished product. I swear after this post no more talk about Isabella. I am mostly pleased with the finished product, although if anyone has any suggestions on how to keep the shoulders from rolling I would be greatly appreciated.

What is it about seaming that puts a lot of knitters in a cold sweat - for me it can turn a lot of hard work into crap with only one needle and a string. I am a perfectionist by nature and this is only my second time seaming so I guess I can't expect it to be perfect, but as usual I am hard on myself (notice I didn't take a picture of the seams) LOL. When I learn I need to see, write it down, ask questions and then do it on my own. Now that is not to say I need to do this with every task - but with knitting I do. So if anyone is willing to show my the proper way to seam/mattress stitch I am all eyes, ears, and pen ready.

Now lets see if my seams last through a wash cycle. SNOL (or SNorting Out Loud - Brilliant ladies for all the opinions on this one - you all rock and you know you are!!!)

Mostly Done Minus the Seams

That is right - Isabella is almost complete - that is all the knitting is done and now it is time to get the sewing needle out to make it official! I just wanted to do a quick post with the news and as soon as it is all sewn up I will make it official with an action shot!

I changed a few things on this pattern - I know the scared girl actually modified a pattern and it worked out perfectly. I didn't like how wide the shoulders were so I fixed that and did a 3-needle bind off (which I am in love with) instead of binding off all the stitches and sewing them all up (much less messy my way).

Hope you like what you see. This is only my second garment for myself. The first being a Bolero by Debbie Bliss. Why is it that for both projects for myself I choose gorgeous patterns with more complicated directions then they needed to be???

More to come when I tie up all those loose strings....

Ripping and Reading

For some reason I find myself trying to live up to the name of my subtitle - Knitting and Ripping. I have ripped Isabella more times then I like to count and I think I am finally in a good place to just keep 'knitting'. This is actually at the top of my XMAS 'to knits' with Jason's sock to follow. Technically not XMAS gifts, but defiantly need to finish knits - before I can get to the other long list.

Can anyone else believe it is September already? Where did the time go and can we somehow get it back please? I have a three day weekend this week which is lovely so I plan to catch up on some knitting and a quilt that I need to finish soon in order to get it sent off to be finished on a quilting machine by my wonderful MIL.

I have been doing a lot of reading of late having finished 'Second Chance', 'Lean Mean Thirteen', and almost done with 'Nickel and Dimed'. Beyond knitting, reading is defiantly my favorite things to do in my long lists of favorites.

Now just so this post has pictures - here are some stash photos....very exciting I know! :~D

Progress, Complaints, Frustrations

I have been working on Isabella for most of the day and have made quite a bit of progress. The lace pattern is going well except for the matched decreases, especially the Slip 1, K2together, Slip Stitch over (there is this huge gap that is super frustrating!!!)

I have never worked Jordana Paige pattern before and I am not finding her directions very helpful. I think she makes things more complicated then they need to be or I am just never a very good pattern reader (I'm sure it is me, and not her). The 4-ply cotton (or rather cotton in general) is not very forgiving. As the title of my blog states I Knit and Rip and I have done that about 5 times in the lace panel alone. It is very frustrating and time consuming. But I can't seem to let things go, except of course the weird space next to the decrese on the right side (I ripped and it didn't fix the problem so I left it. I'm hoping blocking will help. LOL).

I do hope the rest of it goes well. Wish me luck!

Cupcakes, Knitting, and Tea

I know my posts have been rather sporadic of late, but I do hope to correct this very soon. I have really been trying to do some 'actual knitting' and of course the Knit 1 Tea 2 swap has also kept me rather busy with the matches and such.

I have been having trouble with Isabella and am currently not a fan, but I am moving forward trying to make the most of it. Although I love cotton and Rowan, I am not a fan of the 4-ply cotton that this pattern calls for. It seems to stretch much more then I would like and keeping it tight is not working out so well...When I got my invite to Ravelry I had no idea how useful I it could be until now. I of course knew I would like it, but now I love it. The greatest thing about Ravelry is the chance to email others who have worked on a project and ask them questions. It is so helpful.

What I was doing on Tuesday....what do you think?? Who doesn't love a good cupcake? I have been wanting these for awhile and finally I got them and am so happy with how they turned out.

Sockapalooza 4: They Have Arrived

My very own hand knit socks. Edwina knit me these lovely socks that fit PERFECTLY!! These arrived all the way from England! She did a lovely fair isle pattern to celebrate her Scottish Heritage. She also sent along some wonderful foot scrub and pictures of where she is from!

Edwina - I love these socks and I look forward to showing them off! This experience was a lot of fun. Thank you for the time, energy, and care you put into these gorgeous socks.

Knitters Virtual Vacation Swap: Alabama Here I Come

I know you are thinking, what is this her third post of the day? And yes it is, but there was too much to share to hold back and post on different days so bear with me for this last one (it is a goody)....

The KVVS package is to be received by September 3rd and my pal just couldn't wait so today my package arrived via USPS and what a lovely package it was in deed. Before I share all the details I want to say thank you to Jessi of Alabama Fiber Dreams. She put together an amazing package with me in mind. When I think of swapping I think of friends first and the package second and this swap was no different. I have made a new friend in Jessi (hi my fellow sock knitter) who used my blog and emails as a tool to get to know me and decide what to send me. I thank you for your generosity, time, and detail that you put into my package. And look I didn't eat my treats first (very hard to resist, especially that yummy moose munch).

So onto the lovely package: Jessi certainly 'knew' me when she packed this box. Inside I found lots of things that had my name right on them. Jessi realized my love for our kitties (my babies until we have babies), my joy of tea, all things pink, post it's and magnet pad of paper (how did you know 'my need/obsession' for post its and sticky/magnet papers), these really neat 'Yarn Daisy' (never seen one, but I am super excited to try these out), yummy treats, Sharon's Soap N'Stuff in Coconut Lemon Verbena and Lime Margarita (I think I need a mixed drink - LOL), cross-stitch project and wonderfully luscious yarn goodness (Blue Moon Fiber - Socks that Rock and Wolly Boully), and of course a really cool post card from Birmingham, a much needed water bottle from the science center and a vacation journal, as well as other very thoughtful and well planned goodies. I would happily carry these yarns around in my bag just to rub on my face every now and again for a bit of softness and comfort, if only that wouldn't be super weird and get me lots of WTF glances.

Again thank you for all of my wonderful goodies. I will think of you when I put all of my lovely gifts to good and proper use. That S.N.O.B (sometimes naughty occasionally behaved) pad is too cute by the way!

No Sheep Pal: You Wool Love This!

No Sheep Pal was a two month swap that came to an end in July. My lovely pal Dominique (from Belgium) was a great! She sent me some cotton/linen for June and for July she has sent me a cotton/Lyocell Seacell in my favorite colors! The brand is Phildar - Phil Thalassa and it is antibacterial and allows the skin to breath. Along with the yarn she sent me 2 Lambic beers (very Belgium in deed). Beer is not my favorite thing so in hopes of becoming a more well rounded 'drinker' I tried a Lambic thinking fruit and beer how can it be wrong and it wasn't. The only tiny problem is the cost...
These are delicious and a great end to a meal with perhaps dessert? (just an idea, not like I'm biased or anything).

Thank you so much Dominique (currently on a knitting cruise vacation, how cool is that?). It was great getting to know you and have you as my pal. I do hope your pal treated you as well as you have done me. Many thank yous! Now what to knit with this yummy yarn?

Yarn Finds and Sockapalooza

Wanted to share my yarn finds when I met up with Michelle. Some are keepers and others are for swaps but I will tell no more... I found this gorgeous colorway at Windsor Buttons and it is a blend of cotton, nylon, and new wool. I do hope these socks will produce lovely stripes.

Next is a luscious cotton in orange and black (may need to buy some more of this...)

Then I found this yummy looking color way from Regia Silk Color - aren't these colors fun?

Beside yarn I found this great scarf pattern and although scarves are not my favorite thing to knit (only one done and one in progress) this pattern was too great to pass up. The ruffle edge is very feminine and lovely and the perfect 'I Feel Pretty' scarf.

Blogland Friends: Just as Great in Person

Guess who I meet today?? Michelle from InsanKnitty - she is a great lady and we had a great time here in Boston (despite the heat). We first hit up Woolcott and Company in Cambridge. This is a great store filled with lots of wonderful yarns, especially lovely sock yarns! Next we headed back into downtown Boston and had lunch at a lovely little Panini place.

After lunch we headed to Newbury Yarns (I for some reason have never even noticed this store, although I had walked by it 100's of times). We could only quickly glance around due to the power being out, but it was a great store which I plan to head back to as soon as I need to purchase more yarn.

Next we hit Needle Point and Knitting. It has a super small selection, but it was fun to see what they had. We had a lovely walk through the public gardens and the Boston Common to our finally yarn destination Windsor Button. This is a great store because it has a bit of everything. From the most expensive to the durable everyday yarns and of course it has lots and lots of buttons.

It was a great day and a pleasure to meet Michelle in person. She made this lovely cupcake dishcloth for me - isn't it too cute! Thank you so much for the cloth, it is the perfect pattern and the perfect for me color! It will match my up coming tats quite well I think. Thank you Michelle for a great day. I'm so glad that we got to get together!!!

Books, Nominations, and of Course Knitting

This week has been fairly uneventful, until now.....

Today I made my very first batch of canned jam. My MIL sent me Marionberries(a type of blackberry) and so I decided to put them and my left over jars to good use. Cross your fingers that it turns out! I am also making Applesauce in the crock pot. You can beat homemade applesauce! While preparing my homemade goodies I was also doing laundry and now my sockza socks have been washed and are drying on my lovely blockers. While on my daily trip through my favorite knitting blogs I came about Michelle's blog and guess what I discovered? She nominated me for a Rockin Girl Blogger! Isn't that so cool!! Thank you so much Michelle. It is an honor that you thought of me!

What is also cool is that I get to meet Michelle next week and have some fun shopping around for yarns and such here in Boston.

Yesterday we went to the Free Shakespeare in the Park that is hosted every year in Boston Common. The performance was of 'A Mid Summer Nights Dream'. It was an amazing production with lots of laughs and I even got some knitting (Isabella is coming along - although not nearly fast enough) done before the sun set.

Did you say Sewing?

In an effort to not forget my other crafty things I got my sewing machine out the other night and put together these two 'Sock Bags'. Isn't the fabric too perfect? One is for me and the other well that is a surprise for someone special. I was looking for the perfect fabric and although socks would have been better, shoes were the next best thing....

Specks:

They are my own design. I used a plastic coated fabric for the inside to prevent needles from poking through (this happened with the last bag) and a nylon handle instead of a drawstring - this way there will be no twisting around the wrist as I knit and walk (yes it can be done, as long as you look up every once and awhile).
Cotton fabric double ply with 2 layers in the inside as well as the plastic coated lining. Just big enough for a sock project.

An Addiction: Got My Mom Hooked!

I have been knitting for some time and my mom has always crocheted, but the knitting bug has got her. I do believe this occured after she attended the Yarn Harlot's talk for me (in Portland, Oregon). She has started a blog, knit a baby hat, and for our Anniversary she knit me these lovely dishclothes. I have 3 styles all in different cottons and they look awesome. She seems to be a much faster learner then I was back when I started.

Many Thanks mom for these lovely new additions! They will be well carried for and used. Also the soap smells delicious!!!

And now for Harry Potter....(after hitting 3 stores I finally have my copy).

Thanks for all the well wishes for my Anniversary. It was a great night - filled with a great dinner, delicious wine, and an Apple Crumble made by Jason (very tasty, made a great breakfast too).

Anne had a contest going on her blog when she had 10,000 sessions. To be put in the drawing for her contest all you had to do was comment on her blog (something which I already did) and your name would be put into a drawing that number of times.

The rest as they say is history and here I am with this new lovely lace weight yarn from Malabrigo (in Emerald - one of my favorite colors - any ideas for the perfect lace weight project??? I have never knit anything with lace weight, but I am eager to try), a too cute Pez dispenser, a much needed note bad and a lovely smelling candle (not pictured). Isn't that card adorable (note to self - program LYS into phone, LOL).

I would like to take a break in our regular knitting content and political talk and wish my husband a lovely 6th anniversary. It has been an amazing ride thus far with many more years to come.

The day of our rehearsal it started to rain in buckets (not surprising) considering we lived in Oregon, but depressing none the less. In order to prepare for the worst we drove back to Portland (an hour or so drive both ways) to get another tent. We ended up not needed (thank god) but we were prepared. The day was gorgeous and sunny and although the lawn was a bit wet, it proved to be one of the best days of my life!

We have lived in California, Rhode Island, and now Boston - I wonder where our life will take us next...

Thanks for being my best friend, my partner in crime, and a wonderful husband!

And Then There Were Two....

Red's twin is finished! This sock went much faster then the first, but looks just as pretty in my opinion (I'm biased of course). These are for send off between August 2 -7th. Now just to finish adding a few little things to the box...

The Info:

The Pattern: Uptown Boot Socks By, Jennifer L. Appleby ('Favorite Socks' by, Interweave Press')
The Yarn: Lorna's Lace in Red Rover (gorgeous color way, love this yarn).
No Mods, just adjustment for foot size.

This pattern requires a bit of note taking and check marks. The pattern is subtle, but well worth the finished product. Now just to wash, block and send off.

My Loopy Ewe Package just arrived and I had to put red on the blockers to test them out. What to you think?? No I didn't buy and yarn although I really had to force myself to stop from clicking 'add to cart'. Check this store out for your sock needs, Sheri has a great yarn selection as well as lots of other goodies to see.

Politics: Universal Insurance?

I just saw the movie 'Sicko' and let me just say how depressing it made me feel. The U.S. is behind the times in terms of taking care of the people of this country. I originally thought this movie was about the millions of people who go with out insurance on a daily basis, and although this is mentioned the movie focuses on the people with insurance who still can not afford care, insurances companies denying coverage, denying claims, and how many other countries are better off and who take better care of the people of those countries.

Whether you agree with Michael Moore (I think he is great, maybe a little argumentative at times, but for the most part I am in full agreement with his opinions).

With out giving anything away, I think this is a movie that needs to be seen. It will open your eyes to what the U.S. health care system has become and how far it has to go to stop the Health Insurance companies from being big money makers!!!

Naughty Cats, Socks, K1 T2 Swap, and Contests

It has been a crazy week in terms of work. For those of you who know me, you know I work in a hotel and at times it can be super busy. This week was one of those. On Monday I had to bake off over 300 cookies, cut 322 brownies (thanks a bunch Daisy), finish over 200 danish and that is only the beginning. Then came the wrapping up.... This is part in way I haven't posted yet this week and to make up for that I have a few photos to share.

Our shower was dripping so they had to go in through our bedroom wall to fix the problem and then of course they had to putty the wall and our cats being curious decided to check it out. And this is the result, Owen marked his spot! And here is with the evidence on his paw. What a stinker.And for some knitterly news, I probably shouldn't post these photos, but I can't help it. Here our my Sockza socks thus far. I am currently on the foot of my second sock and so far so good. I should be able to make the send off date no problem. For those of my friends who are doing Sockza (Anne, Chan, Jen, Bertha, Amy) the send of date has been extended, from August 2nd to the 7th. Check out Alison's site for more info on this.

And lastly don't forget about the contest for the upcoming swap (Knit 1, Tea 2) that I am co-hosting with Chan and Mary. Tea Time: Would you like cream with that Love?

I love tea and could drink it hot, cold and even lukewarm and this is why I am super excited about co-hosting Chan's Knit 1, Tea 2 Swap. Details will be up in the next few weeks so keep checking back. Also there are some great button options for when the swap is in full swing.

How do you like your tea? I am a bit of honey kind of girl with a splash of milk if my mood calls for it.

Now if only I could have an English accent to go with all the tea drinking...

Boston Knit-out and Crochet Too: September 30th

Here is my thinking....Perhaps we can all meet up for a chat in person??? Ravelry: I am IN....

There are very few things in terms of knitting that are cooler then the actual act of knitting, but RAVELRY is one of them. I just got my invite today and I am so excited I can hardly see straight. I am having a wee bit of trouble adding friends to my list so if those of you beta testing know how to fix this please help a girl out.

'Red' 1 is Finished!

The first one of my Sockza socks is complete. It took me much longer then necessary to complete her, but she is finished and I am quite pleased with her as a whole. I have cast on for the second sock and am almost done with my first round of cabling. I anticipate this one going much faster now that I have all the measurements done and number of rounds to complete marked down.

As I stated before the turned heel of this sock was not my favorite, but the toe of this one is gorgeous - in my opinion of course. When I first cast on for this sock and had gone a ways in the pattern I thought I may have done something wrong, because I couldn't see the cable coming together like in the picture. So after ripping once I re-did and of course it was as it was before, but now looking in the picture you can really see the cable pop.

I do hope my pal likes these...

No Sheep Has Arrived: Lovely in LINEN

My 'No Sheep' pal's package arrived today! She sent me a lovely skein of linen. I think it will make the perfect face cloth (can't wait to cast on for that one). She also sent some body lotion, shower gel, and soap made with Olive Oil, how cool is that? Notice the card behind everything it is a pile of found socks and mittens - perfect don't you think?

Thank you so much D! I will make sure and put everything to good use. It certainly made for a bright ending to a very rough day!

Vacation Yarn: Hallstatt, Austria

Here is my little take home after our vacation a few weeks ago. I know it is a little late being posted but I had a friend ask me so here they are. The one on the left is more like soft ribbon and not something I would normally buy, but they lady had made this gorgeous dropped stitch pull over that looked so neat that I had to buy some. The yarn on the right is Merino and it is soooooooo soft. Not sure what I will make with either just yet, but I'll let you know when I figure it out.

LYS Reviews: Favorites, Must See, etc

Red Number 1: Her Progress Thus Far

'Red' is for my sockapalooza pal and I am quite pleased thus far on the progress. The pattern is 'Uptown Boot' Socks from the Favorite Socks book by Interweave Knits. The yarn is Lorna's Lace in Red Rover. My pal likes jewel tones and red and purple are two of her favorite so I thought this color would fulfill all possibilities - what do you think? After this picture was taken I turned the heel (not my favorite - but it looks ok - Ann Budd's 'Undulating Rib Socks' have a cleaner turned heel I think) and picked up the gusset stitches. I am headed in the right direction and time frame for finishing up for my August 2nd send off. The cable pattern is subtle, but intriguing and I think it flows very nicely with these colors. I do hope my pal will like it.

This may seem like it was easy to achieve, but getting this sucker on was a pain. The last time I did this I broke a needle so I was extra careful this time. Wanted to get an action shot of sorts!

Dishcloth Package Arrived: What Fun!

My dishcloth swap package arrived!! Lisa sent me some yummy chocolates (long gone), some Memphis BBQ sauce from her home state, 2 wonderful smelling soaps and bath gel, and a gorgeous ball of 'Sugar'n Cream' in a lovely variegated shades of pink, blue and white, and a awesome new dishcloth in some of my favorite colors! Thanks for everything Lisa! I hope you had as much fun with this swap as I did!

A toast to swaps - knitting is awesome and swaps are great - but more importantly being surrounded by knitters in the blog community is the very best.

Isn't the On-Line Knitting Community Amazing?

Before I left on vacation I posted a comment on Chan's blog (who I know from Anne who I met through my first swap KTE - make sense?) about a possible tea swap and to my surprise she drew names and I won. How cool is that? She told me when I returned she would send along some tea. Well I picked up the package today from the post office and when I got home and opened it - I was shocked an amazed at what a thoughtful gift that Chan put together for me.
She sent some delicious loose leaf teas, a beautiful tea dishcloth (hand made I might add), Eclair stitch markers (how perfect are those being that I am a pastry cook? Too cute), and some lovely pampered chef tools that I know will come in very handy.Chan - many thanks for putting so much thought into this lovely gift. I will treasure it and put everything to very good use. You are a wonderful new friend and that I knew well before this box reached me!

On the home knitting front - I made my very first dishcloth! I found a pattern on line and tried following the directions but I didn't like how it was turning out - so I took one line of the pattern and made up the rest. I used Debbie Bliss cotton (which as cottons go - it is very soft, but maybe it is not the best thing for dishcloths, because it is a bit fuzzy) I am very pleased with the result despite the fuzzy aspect. What to you think?

Yarn Harlot's Visit to Portland

Yesterday was the 'Yarn Harlot's' visit to Powell's book store in my home town of Portland, Oregon. My mom was kind enough to go for me with the hopes of getting my book signed. She said there was about 400 people there all with knitting of course. She said and I quote, "What a clever and talented woman, even though there were about a gazillion people, she was amazingly graceful under pressure. Not only did I enjoy the talk, I got to meet her. what a gracious woman." And guess what - she knew my blog!

To the right - My mom does not knit (but she DOES crochet, cook, craft,crossword puzzles,writes, needlepoint, bake, decorate,drive people insane, & adores her husband and children who can do no wrong - in her own words), but Stephanie felt it would give her her socks, because it would give her 'Street Cred' and Stephanie is holding the 'fetching' gloves that I knit for my mom.

I'm Back and I even got Some Knitting Done

We got back yesterday and what an amazing trip it was. We hit Munich, then Salzburg (I recommend the "Sound of Music" bike tour it was awesome), then onto Hallstatt, then to a little town called Melk, then it was a boat trip along the Danube, and lastly we hit Vienna. Here are a few pictures of our trip to whet your appetite. I will post a link to our picture gallery site when we are finished up loading the photos.

Does this look familiar? This is what was used for the back of the house in the 'Sound of Music'.

I think overall my favorite city was Salzburg.We had the nicest weather there and we got to see and do a lot. Munich, I am in love with and although this trip we kind of got rained out and it was a random holiday it was still good to be there. Hallstatt was beautiful, but there is not a lot to do there. Melk was a cute town with this gorgeous Abbey that sits high above the city. The Danube although referred to as the blue river, was not so blue due to lots and lots of rain, but it was a really nice way to see the country side on our way to Vienna. Vienna is beautiful with a ton to do and see. It was the last stop on our tour and we were all a little tired, but we made the most of it with lots of cakes, ice cream, and more desserts.

Off to Europe: A bit of knitting to say Bon Voyage

Just finished packing for our 2 week trip and let me say the clothes were far easier to pack then the knitting. Questions running through my mind...."Will the TSA take this away from me?, Will they let me have 5 different types of needles?, Do I have to have something on the needles? How many skeins of yarn is too many? How many socks can I finish in a 2 week period? Should I take the tank top to or would 3 pairs of socks and a tank be too many things?"

These are just a few of the things I had to ponder while packing up my knitting. What I have decided is that I will only take the socks - because if by chance I finish all of that knitting I also am bringing a book and as much as I want to take all of my projects - that would require another bag.

So even though these are pictures of projects I finished sometime ago - I wanted to share some of my 'firsts'.

Below is my first 'me' project. The pattern is from Debbie Bliss and I used a cotton blend for my version.
This is a hat I made for my father-in-law for christmas.
Lastly my very own 'fetching' gloves.

Wrist Bands: A Super Quick Knit

So my friend who works at Starbucks has wrist tattoos and can't let them 'show' so to help add to her style I have knit her some personalized wrist bands. This is the second set I have done and I am quite pleased with the look. I took the future sock pattern I am going to use and modified it to work with this variegated acrylic. The pattern looks kind of crazy, but it is beautiful. I know acrylic is not too classy, but let's think - espresso flying, milk, blended beverages, cashmere or some other super soft yarn wouldn't work in this case!

Knitting of course - it can keep me going for hours. If it was only one type of yarn it would be sock yarn and sock patterns - they are quick and the more intricate patterns keep me focused and goin

My husband, because he can make me laugh under any situation.

I love making ice cream. I enjoy trying new combinations, different flavors, and most importantly eating it after!

I am currently obsessed with socks. They are great to carry around and the patterns are east to difficult enought to keep my interest.

Riding my bike. I love being out on a beautiful day enjoying the sun and a great ride along the water.
